Working to make mental health support easier to understand, access, and trust.

Christopher Hein is the Co-Founder and Mental Health Insights Lead at Trillium Counselling, a multidisciplinary mental health counselling therapy practice based in Kitchener-Waterloo serving clients in person locally and online across Ontario.

His work focuses on bridging the gap between clinical mental health expertise and the public — translating what therapists actually do into plain-language resources that help individuals and couples understand when therapy might help, what to expect from the process, and how to choose the right therapist for their needs.

Christopher has led the growth of Trillium Counselling since its founding, building a team of more than 20 Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers who have collectively supported over 10,000 Ontarians. Across that time, one pattern has been consistent: some of the people who benefit most from therapy are often the ones who spent the longest wondering whether they "really needed it."

Christopher's articles focus on the questions prospective clients ask most often — before, during, and after their first session. Topics include:

  • How to know when therapy might help

  • Understanding different types of therapy (CBT, EMDR, ACT, DBT, EFT, and others)

  • What to expect from a first therapy session

  • Choosing the right therapist for your needs

  • Navigating insurance, costs, and access to psychotherapy in Ontario

  • Supporting a partner, friend, or family member through mental health challenges

  • The practical realities of life transitions, burnout, grief, and relationship stress

  • Content is reviewed for accuracy before publication.

Christopher's mental health articles are created in collaboration with Trillium Counselling's clinical team and are reviewed for accuracy when they discuss clinical topics, therapy approaches, symptoms, or treatment-related decisions.

When an article has been clinically reviewed, the reviewer is named on the page along with their credentials. This helps readers understand who reviewed the content and what professional background they bring.

Educational articles may reference trusted health organizations such as CAMH, the American Psychological Association, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and the Public Health Agency of Canada where relevant.  Supporting articles with mental health statistics can be very helpful in sharing how these challenges are shared by many, and those going through these issues are not alone.

This content is for general education only and is not a substitute for diagnosis, treatment, emergency support, or individualized advice from a qualified health professional.
