How Can You Benefit from Psychotherapy?
Many people believe that psychotherapy can't possibly help them. Some worry that their problems are too difficult to be improved by something as simple as talking. Others feel that their issues aren't severe enough to warrant this kind of care, and they should just "get over it." But psychotherapy is like any other form of health care. If you're suffering, you deserve effective treatment.
If you're looking for evidence that it can help, psychotherapy has the scientific data to back it up. About 75 percent of people who turn to psychotherapy report that they've benefitted from the process. Research shows that they experience positive changes in their emotions, behaviours, and relationships.
Psychotherapy does more than just lift people's moods. It's been shown to improve function in their bodies as well. Just as emotional problems such as depression can have physical symptoms, finding relief can be felt in the body as well. The results include fewer sick days, less disability, a reduction in medical problems, and boosted work satisfaction. When you are able to take control of your choices, daily life feels lighter, both figuratively and literally.
On top of that, brain imaging techniques have shown that therapy even helps to make positive changes in the way the brain works. These changes help people with mental illness to function more effectively. The improvements are significant, and they are similar to what patients experience when using medication.
This doesn't mean that you have to choose between medication and psychotherapy. We are committed to finding the most effective treatment plan for each patient, and for some people, that includes both medication and therapy.
Mounting research shows that psychotherapy is an effective way to guide people to happier, healthier lives. If you're interested in reading more information, click here for a deeper discussion about the evidence showing what psychotherapy can do.

FAQs
Therapy works best when the 'fit' is right with your therapist. That’s why we carefully match you with someone whose expertise fits your needs and preferences. Building a strong therapeutic relationship is key to creating a supportive and effective experience.
Before meeting your therapist, you’ll complete a brief intake form. Your first 50‑minute session focuses on what brings you in, your goals, relevant history, and what success would look like. We’ll explain confidentiality and co‑create a plan so you know what comes next. It’s normal to feel nervous—your therapist will guide the pace.
The frequency of sessions depends on your needs and goals. Many people start with weekly or bi-weekly appointments and adjust as they make progress. The total number of sessions is unique to you—your therapist will work with you to find the right approach.
Life’s challenges can show up as stress, anxiety, depression, or difficulties in relationships. Depending on your needs and goals, our therapists may use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to address unhelpful thought patterns, EMDR to process trauma, or Narrative Therapy to help you reshape the stories you hold about yourself and your experiences.
Other approaches, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), or Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), may also be used to ease feelings of guilt, shame, or overwhelm. Each therapy plan is personalized to your situation, creating a safe and supportive space to explore, heal, and grow.
Most of our services are covered by extended health benefit plans. Coverage varies with every plan, so please check your specific plan or contact your provider to confirm your benefits.
Most employer benefits cover therapy with a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW) or a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). We can direct bill to most major insurers when your plan allows it; otherwise, we email insurance‑ready receipts after your session.
