Wilfrid Laurier student counselling coverage - Explained
If you’re a Laurier student thinking about counselling, the first question is usually cost.
Many Laurier students have coverage through their student plan that can reduce the cost of therapy with eligible providers.
Note: The insurer and benefit details below reflect what was available at the time of posting and may change. Always check your current student benefits for the most up-to-date coverage.
What $100/visit up to $1,000/year can mean (in sessions)
Your plan may cover therapy at up to $100 per visit, to a combined maximum of $1,000 per benefit year (eligible providers and plan rules apply).
Using $175 per session as an example:
- Plan pays up to $100 per session
- You pay the remainder: about $75 per session
- $1,000 total could cover about 10 sessions at $100/visit
How payment typically works (with direct billing)
This plan is administered through Blue Cross. If direct billing is available for your specific coverage:
- At each session: we submit the claim directly to Blue Cross (when eligible).
- You typically pay only the difference: for example, about $75 on a $175 session (if $100/visit applies).
- After the $1,000 maximum is reached: you would pay the full session fee out of pocket (unless you have additional coverage).
If direct billing isn’t available, you can usually pay and submit receipts to Blue Cross for reimbursement.
Quick note: coverage and eligible provider categories can change—confirm your current student benefits for the latest details.
What to check in your plan
- Eligible provider types (for example: RP, RSW/MSW, etc)
- Per-visit limit ($100) and annual maximum ($1,000)
- Direct billing availability under your plan setup
- Any documentation requirements
If you’re not sure you “need” therapy
It’s common to wonder if your situation is “big enough” for therapy. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit—many students use counselling to get unstuck, reduce overwhelm, and handle school and life with more clarity.
Some common reasons students reach out include:
- stress and burnout
- anxiety and overthinking
- motivation and procrastination
- confidence and relationships
- major transitions and identity shifts
Getting support early can be preventative—not because anything is “wrong,” but because you deserve tools that make life easier.
