York University student counselling coverage - explained
If you’re a York student thinking about counselling, your student benefits may help cover a meaningful portion of therapy costs.
Many York students have mental health coverage through their student plan for eligible providers.
Note: The insurer and benefit details below reflect what was available at the time of posting and may change. Always check your current student benefits for the most up-to-date coverage.
What $125/visit (up to 10 visits) can mean (in sessions)
Your plan may include coverage of $125 per visit, up to 10 visits per year (plan rules and eligibility apply).
Using $175 per session as an example:
- Plan pays $125 per session
- You pay the remainder: about $50 per session
- That can support up to 10 sessions with predictable costs per visit (thats about 2.5 months of support at significantly reduced cost)
How payment typically works (with direct billing)
This plan is administered through GreenShield. If direct billing is available for your specific coverage:
- At each session: we submit the claim to GreenShield for the covered amount (when eligible).
- You typically pay the remainder: for example, about $50 on a $175 session.
- Once your covered visits/maximum are used: you would pay the full session fee out of pocket unless you have other coverage.
If direct billing isn’t available, you can usually pay and submit receipts to GreenShield for reimbursement.
Quick note: coverage and eligible provider categories can change—confirm your current student benefits for the latest details.
What to check in your plan
- Eligible provider types and categories included in the combined limit
- Per-visit amount ($125) and visit maximum (10)
- Direct billing availability
- Any documentation requirements
If you’re not sure you “need” therapy
It’s common to wonder if your situation is “big enough” for therapy. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit—many students use counselling to get unstuck, reduce overwhelm, and handle school and life with more clarity.
Some common reasons students reach out include:
- stress and burnout
- anxiety and overthinking
- confidence and relationships
- motivation and procrastination
- major transitions and identity shifts
Getting support early can be preventative—not because anything is “wrong,” but because you deserve tools that make life easier.
